Antonov AN-124
This is a great model for those who have the space for it and is not scared of doing decals. Built as part of a club display project for the IPMS Nationals at Telford for 2008 of 1/144th scale civilian aircraft. The general building of the model was straight forward, with five options of display and five livery choices. I built this model with both the nose and rear loading doors open in the kneeling position and the HeavyLift livery. I had built the Antonov without fitting the wings, nose, rear doors and undercarriage to make it easier to handle the model whilst painting and adding the decals Painting of the model went without any trouble, using Tamiya Gloss White for the fuselage and a mix of Revell Grey's on the wings and lower fuselage. The biggest job with this project was the decal application, with a total of around 700 decals to be applied. The main wings had 258 on each one, so be warned, it will about three hours for each one.
After a couple of coats of Johnson Klear, the model assembly was finished and some weathering washes from the Promodeller range was used to bring out the panel lines. The display base is made from a sheet of routered MDF with the airfield apron painted onto it and some scenic scatter glued to the corner. On the kit, there has been a couple of mistakes made on it by Revell. Firstly the nose section is narrower then the fuselage, so modification needs to be done to the fuselage if you are making the model with the nose in the closed position. Secondly, on the decal sheet, there is not enough of certain decals needed for the wings. Thirdly, on the decals again, for the livery which I used, the horizontal blue stripe for the main fuselage is in two sections and when fitted, they are too short. These items is a big oversight which Revell has missed.
